SUN RA
SUN RA and his MYTH-SCIENCE ARKESTRA - originally released in 1961.
It was in Chicago in the mid 50s that Herman Blount slowly transformed himself into Sun Ra, and one of the ways that he did it was by finding a fellow occultist named Alton Abraham. Some of the Arkestra band members thought Abraham might be a gangster, as he was sometimes violent and seemed to have lots of money, but he managed the band from time to time, and also funded a huge all-in-one-all-or-nothing recording session in 60, resulting in 30 or 40 songs being taped.
This record, along with 'Angels and Demons at Play', 'Holiday for Soul Dance', and 'We Travel the Spaceways' eventually issued that material.
Lots of it is peculiarly askew jazz that's not quite bop, has a noir feel, and features lots ofatonal horn lines braided together. Sonny's first sound of his own. Phil Cohran on cornet, plus John Gilmore, Marshall Allen, Ronnie Boykins.
